Sex trafficking has only recently been identified as a problem crime against our youth, even though children in the sex trade has been going on for centuries. The lack of victim identification and intervention over decades has resulted in thousands of adult survivors with have received little to no support. Through her personal journey and professional experience, Katie will discuss the psychosocial impact of untreated complex PTSD in older youth and adult victims. She will explain how the lack of recognition of trauma in youth further complicates recovery as an adult. She will describe the criminalization of adult survivors, racial biases impacting victim identification, and successes and challenges of providing services to this underserved population. Participants will be provided ways providers can: develop trauma informed, holistic service plans to serve older youth and adult survivors of CSE, advocate with adult survivors for policy and services to address sex trafficking, and how to provide choice so that older youth and adults can make informed decisions around their own care.
